Transitioning from highschool to university or university to the workforce can be a huge adventure in itself! During these times, you will have parents, family members, teachers and even friends in your ear about what you should and shouldn’t do moving forward. In saying this, it’s becoming increasingly clear that there is no “right thing” to do after leaving study. This is arguably the best time of your life, so it’s time to explore, experiment and learn more about the world and yourself.

Types of Gap Years

So what is a gap year? It is typically defined as a year-long break that takes place after prolonged study. However, the gap year doesn’t need to be an entire year, and nor does it need to take place right after study! Some people choose to defer their university degrees for a semester to take time off and travel, while others need a break from the demands of the workforce. The options are truly endless when it comes to a gap year, some people choose to volunteer or travel abroad, while others take the time to focus on passion projects.

Immersion

An immersion gap year involves spending an extended period of time overseas in an unfamiliar culture. If you really want a taste of what life is like in another country, then nothing beats the authentic experience of living with a host family, taking language classes and engaging with cultural activities. This type of gap year will push you outside your comfort zone, however, it isn’t for everyone and requires you to have significant savings before you go.

Volunteer

A volunteer gap year is a great way to make a positive impact on the places you go, while also giving you an opportunity to try lots of new things. If you are completely lost on what direction you would like to take in life, then a volunteer gap year could be just for you! You can try your hand at graphics design, marketing, economics, a trade or even horse riding if you feel like it. The great thing about this gap year is that it gives you a taste of various careers and jobs to give you a better idea about what you enjoy and want out of your working life. You might even find that you are a whizz at something you had never even thought about before!

Passion Projects

In the modern age, it is becoming increasingly popular for individuals to follow their passions, hobbies and interests in a more serious way. Define a more concrete project in your time off and fuel some of your favourite things. Again the opportunities really are endless. You could start a business, write a book, start creating art, offer a service or pursue smaller feats like curating the perfect instagram or taking up a brand new hobby like photography.

The important thing to remember is that there is no timer or timeline for life. Take it at your own pace, and use your gap year to spend time doing the things you love, as this is the best way to be your happiest and most fulfilled self! Whether you plan on galavanting around the world or want to pursue your true passions, a gap year is a fantastic way to slow down and really evaluate your life, dreams and needs.
