SA will bid to host the COP31 conference in 2026, a global event attracting more than 30,000 individuals and generate an economic benefit of upwards of $500 million.
In combination with the state government confirming that Adelaide has the capacity to hold the event, the federal government will then place a bid. The COP summit, also known as Conference of Parties, is a meeting of 197 nations and is the ultimate climate change decision making body of the United Nations.
With past compatriots such as King Charles, Prince William, Greta Thunberg and Leonardo DiCaprio, having attended the event previously. If the bid is successful, the event will be at the Convention Centre in November 2026.
Whilst the feasibility analysis commissioned by the government found that Adelaide hosting the event can accommodate all visiting delegates and can offer a safe experience for all attendees.
Ideally, hosting the event would benefit the state through tourism, trade and investment, while also benefiting the brands of Adelaide. Considering South Australia is already a world leader in renewable energy and decarbonization, hosting COP31 would put SA on the map.
The flagship on how SA addresses climate change can be shown to the world as we are driving for net zero emissions. With other states such as Brisbane and Sydney being interested in the event, Adelaide will stand out although the ultimate decision comes down to the federal government.
