New Labor Government legislation would allow supermarkets to open two hours earlier on Sundays in a major shakeup of state trading hours.
The change will see supermarkets open at 9am on Sunday mornings instead of 11am.
Premier Peter Malinauskas says a three-week consultation will begin before any legislation is drafted.
“We’re going for short and sharp consultation to engage with workers but also businesses that operate within the sector,” Mr. Malinauskas said.
The Government also hopes the new legislation will add structure to shop trading hours on public holidays such as boxing day.
Premier Malinauskas says the government values getting the balance between interests of consumers, industry, and employees.
Drakes Supermarket operator John-Paul Drake “100 per cent” backed the policy saying it would create more jobs within the sector.
“We employ more people and they’re going to get more hours, so it’s a win-win for everyone,” Mr. Drake said.
Mr. Drake confirmed the demand for earlier trading hours saying there are line-ups at 11am every Sunday.
